Growing up Korean American has involved an awkward balance of my cultural heritage and personal identity. In this piece, I explore the ideas of intersection, how these two parts of my life combine and overlap. I think it’s important to embrace your cultural roots and allow it to serve as a larger figure in my day-to-day life. Whether it’s speaking Korean to my friends and family, bowing to my elders, or incorporating Korean traditional art into my current art practices, I find that this immersion can be beautiful. 

Abigail Shim (she/her) ‘27 is a sophomore from Torrance, California. She is an honors student majoring in studio arts. She plans to bring a multidisciplinary approach to art making.
