Film By Alexandra Siambekos
Through my Documentary Production course, I had the opportunity to revisit Yia Yia and Papou: A Story of Perseverance (my submission to last year’s anthology). As a reversal and expansion of the original film, Yia Yia and Papou tells my grandparents’ story from the perspective of their children and grandchildren.
Yia Yia and Papou coincided with the significant personal decision to legally change my last name to Siambekos. I now realize this was part of my journey. This filmmaking experience also allowed me to further connect with my ethnic identity and express the deep appreciation I have for my grandparents. For that, I am so grateful.
Alexandra Siambekos is an honors Television, Radio, and Film student, compelled to make a difference through storytelling. As a senior, she is most excited about her honors thesis documentary Keepers of Manaris and the opportunities ahead to advance her career and impact as a filmmaker.
