A multi-colored stitchwork piece that depicts the neighborhoods of London.

By Maureen Ferguson

Studying abroad has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my academic career, and I recently got to spend three months living and studying in London. As I explored the unique neighborhoods that make up the city, I found myself comparing each of these neighborhoods to places I have already visited or spent time in. For example, I realized Hyde Park reminded me of Delaware Park in Buffalo, Brixton reminded me of my time in San Andres, Colombia, and the business district of Holborn reminded me of Washington, D.C.

I took my comparisons and mapped London through personal experience and spatial association in the piece Streets & Stitches. Here, the map has been reconstructed as a conceptual and literal quilting of London made up of fragments of other cities. Each fragment of the quilt is the map of the place I have visited prior that corresponds with the location of the London neighborhood that reminds me of it.
